“You’ve got to have hope, if you lose hope, then what do you have?”
“That 80% of our staff have identified as having a lived experience, is amazing. It’s the first time I’ve seen an organisation provide an opportunity to identify with that, value the experience and then support them in their jobs.”
“I’ve learn’t so much from being involved and have become a lot more confident, I’ve made a lot of friends. My Mum has had the most amazing life; she’s sick, but that doesn’t make her any less valuable.”
“My vision is that people can access appropriate care when, and as, it’s needed. if you’re sick, you go to the GP, get whatever support you need... Rather than the drama it is now.”
“Young people who have the support they need as either carers or people living with a mental illness become better adults. Early Intervention means better recovery outcomes. Hate the illness, not the person. People with a mental illness need our help and compassion, not fear.”
“For people living with a mental illness in Australia I would like to see that they are acknowledged, respected, and treated as equal. My son has schizophrenia, and I think he’s the bravest person I know.”
“Real stories are critical. I can talk about mental illness, but until someone says, ‘I’ve got Schizophrenia, and I need to borrow a book from your library, don’t be scared of me, this is my story,’ it is all abstract.”
