“I would like to see diet and exercise interventions as a part of the standard care in mental health.”
How did your relationship with One Door begin?
A family friend, who works in their respite services, suggested I went to Pioneer Clubhouse to volunteer. She said, "Come along to the Clubhouse and get involved." She knew I was a year out of uni, and I didn't have a full-time job. So she said to come down and see what happens. Within a week they wanted to run New Moves, and I had the qualifications to do a program like that, so I got a job, pretty much.
What are the things you like about One Door?
I like the all-inclusive approach, you go into work, and you've got carers, consumers, clinicians and everyone works together, supporting one another, and there’s no discrimination. Everyone within One Door has their own role which I like.
What's your vision for the future of mental health care in Australia?
I would like to see diet and exercise interventions as a part of the standard care in mental health. Weight gain is a big side effect of medication; as well the risks to cardiac health, so lifestyle changes are really important. For physical health to be more of a priority or more of a routine that's frequently checked and treated, would be really great.
