“Never, ever, ever give up hope”
What are the things you like about One Door?
I’ve been associated with the organisation for 14 years, and I think I've stayed this long because I like working specifically with key people who have been here a long time. I've watched a lot of staff and programs over the time and we always seem to attract kind people that want to be with our clients and are empathic and really interested. I absolutely just love our clientele.
What is your vision for the future of mental health care in Australia?
The tagline is, "Creating a world in which people with mental illness are valued and treated as equals." I think this is so important. I'm surprised that we are still dealing with a lot of misunderstanding, particularly about severe illnesses. I'm really surprised that given the amount of information that's out there and the technology that people use to find that information, that there is still quite a big gap. My vision would be that we would we start talking about mental illness so we can talk less about it, the more people understand it the less it becomes such a big deal.
What advice do you have for someone with mental illness or someone who has a loved one with mental illness?
I would say never, ever, ever give up hope. Because people will tell you that there is not a lot out there, but there is a huge amount of support out there.
