Late last year, a community member from Sydney’s north (who wishes to remain anonymous) made a generous financial donation that helped One Door’s Pioneer Clubhouse purchase a new refrigerator.
Pioneer Clubhouse is a safe, supportive and respectful place where people experiencing mental health challenges come to connect with community, participate in recreational activities and receive support for their mental health and wellbeing. One Door staff also support Pioneer Clubhouse members to achieve their education and employment-related goals, such as returning to or commencing study and/or securing casual, part-time or full-time work.
Having a new refrigerator has enabled the Pioneer Clubhouse to provide food and cooked meals to service users. It has also allowed staff and service users to store the meals they make together in takeaway containers, reducing food waste and supporting the program’s sustainability efforts.
Pioneer Clubhouse Program Specialist, Janine Kabir, said the fridge has been a game-changer for Pioneer Clubhouse members.
“We are very grateful for this person’s generosity, which has helped make the Pioneer Clubhouse feel like a home away from home for service users,” Janine said.
“The fridge has helped our efforts to cook with service users, teaching them important life skills and the power of connection through cooking, food and sharing a meal together. It’s also given us an opportunity to educate service users about nutrition and how a well-balanced diet can impact and improve our mental and physical health.”
There are dozens of ways donations can help people experiencing mental health challenges. Every dollar helps us provide innovative services and to create a world in which people with mental health challenges are valued, respected and treated as equals.
