Mind Australia and One Door Mental Health are delighted to announce Dr Hamish Fibbins and Dr Hayley North as the joint recipients of the 2026 Peter Meyer Research Grant.
Funded by the Peter Meyer Fund and administered by Mind, One Door and the Trustees, the grant provides $15,000 to support innovative research aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of people experiencing schizophrenia. The grant reflects both organisations’ commitment to advancing evidence-based practice and improving outcomes for people affected by mental health challenges.
Dr Fibbins was selected for their project, “Integrating Lung Cancer Screening into Mental Health Services at Prince of Wales Hospital”, while Dr North was chosen for their project “Can Managing Blood Sugar Unlock Better Outcomes for People with Schizophrenia?”
Dr Laura Hayes, Mind’s Research and Evaluation Manager, said the projects were selected for their strong potential to contribute to improved understanding, treatment and support for individuals and communities affected by schizophrenia.
“Their work represents the depth of expertise and passion across our sector and highlights the importance of continued investment in research that makes a real-world difference,” Dr Hayes said.

The Peter Meyer Research Grant was established to support young researchers aged 35 and under in New South Wales. The grant honours the late Peter Meyer, who passed away in 2003 after living with schizophrenia for more than 15 years. Rosalind and Bob Meyer set up the Peter Meyer Fund within days of his passing. The fund aims to help, in some small way, young Australian researchers who aim to improve the wellbeing of people living with schizophrenia.
